How CBD Biohacking Helps Engineer Your Body
The term sounds frightening at first glance. It reminds you of those sci-fi movies portraying dystopian futures where bad guys hack into your DNA to control your very being. Biohacking, in reality, is a relatively tame term that gives you control over your body.
It’s all about using all the available information to make informed decisions. Sometimes, it means systematically experimenting with your body so you can acquire some useful information about how it responds to certain changes in diet and lifestyle. This does not mean self-diagnosing oneself against dangerous illness, because that’s just reckless.
Enter CBD & CBD biohacking. There is a lot of research that suggests its health benefits. Though it’s not a ‘magic bullet’ that cures everything.
CBD or cannabidiol has got all the makings of what you may see in magazines as a perfect ‘superfood’, although we’re not making that claim. For one, it doesn’t have a terrific nutritional profile. This distinction goes to hemp with its many terpenes, flavonoids, and cannabinoids (CBD is a cannabinoid). This is why many popular biohackers like Tim Ferris, Dr. Rhonda Patrick, and Anthony DiClementi have added it to their arsenal.
CBD Biohacking and Energy
CBD biohacking is all about trying to get to a new state of elevated focus, awareness, and energy levels. In this regard, it is possible to use CBD to help with energy and focus without stimulating any euphoric experiences. CBD does not have mind-altering effects.
CBD Oil and Brain Health
Studies suggest that CBD help mitigate the negative cognitive effects of the psychoactive component of weed THC. Therefore, scientists raised the hypothesis that it may also help with cognitive dysfunctions from other causes.
CBD may protect the brain due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
Mixing CBD With Other Foods
One common ‘biohacking’ practice is to combine the nutritional power of superfood smoothies with CBD to supercharge your body. Common nutritious foods include leafy greens, avocado, pineapple, mango, hemp seeds, almond milk, and oats.
Here’s our favorite recipe:
- 2 tbsp almonds
- ½ tbsp cacao
- 1 cup kale
- 1 cup spinach
- 1 can of coconut milk
- ½ cup of almond milk
- 2 tbsp cashews
- 1 ½ tsp cinnamon
- 1 banana
- 10 to 20 mg of pure CBD
Toss kale, bananas, almonds, spinach, coconut milk, cashews, and almond milk in a blender. Blend the mixture until everything is well mixed. Now add cacao, cinnamon, and CBD into the mixture. Continue to blend the mixture for a further 10 to 15 seconds.
You have your very own smoothie that lets you biohack that recharges your energy levels and your confidence. It’s the ideal cocktail to add to your health and wellness routine.
The Bioavailability of CBD
Before CBD can get to work, it first has to reach the bloodstream. There are many natural barriers that systematically flush out CBD from the system. The most popular form of consuming CBD is oral.
The journey of a capsule is not ideal if you are particularly concerned with high CBD efficacy. Capsules are broken down and dissected by the body’s digestive system. Then, the absorbed CBD goes through the liver, which may metabolize a large percentage of CBD out of the system. This suggests only 20% of the CBD that’s ingested could potentially give real benefits.
A more effective form of consuming CBD is the sublingual (under the tongue) method. It directly enters the bloodstream without going through the digestive system or the liver first. This way, CBD starts taking effect much faster due to the much higher levels of bioavailability. By some estimates, one can increase absorption rates by up to 35%. Or you could vape CBD oil, with exceptionally high bioavailability rates, as much as 46%.
Our recommended choice of administering CBD through oil drops under the tongue. We believe this 500 mg hemp extract to be the best CBD oil for helping with focus and concentration.
How Safe is CBD Oil?
CBD is relatively well tolerated. The good news is that no one has overdosed on CBD yet, although this is not impossible. A person weighing 180 lbs would need approximately 33 tbsp of CBD for it to threaten the body, but this number is still purely speculative, although don’t try it.
Although no two endocannabinoid systems are alike, the general rule of thumb says that doses of CBD between 10 to 20 mg once or twice a day are more than enough for the body to derive its benefits. If you still don’t experience any change, try to progressively increase the dosage by 1 mg until you notice a difference.
Side Effects to Watch Out For
Even the healthiest superfoods can cause side effects, either because of excessive consumption or due to an allergic reaction. CBD is no different. The majority of side effects associated with CBD are mild in nature and stop occurring after one discontinues use.
Below are just a few side effects:
- Disrupted sleep patterns (hyperactivity)
- Mood disorders
- Dry mouth
CBD and drug interactions
CBD is known to interact with drugs present in the body, and either increases their efficacy or renders them useless. Most medications and herbs are metabolized by a set of liver enzymes called CYP450. Research has shown that CBD is also metabolized via the CYP450 enzymes, resulting in reduced ability to metabolize other drugs.
If someone is using blood thinners like Coumadin or warfarin, CBD slows their metabolism. This increases the amount of medication in the body, which can very quickly prove to be toxic, causing traumatic bleeding, life-threatening hemorrhage, and other dangerous problems.
If CBD is taken along with benzodiazepines like Ativan and Xanax, it can increase their side effects and cause one to enter into a state of drowsiness.
This is why it is important to consult your doctor if you are on medications. By inhibiting crucial enzymes, CBD will allow more drugs to stay in the system. Your doctor will readjust your dosage requirements for these drugs to ensure better compatibility with CBD.
It’s not a good idea to mix medications and CBD without consulting a doctor first.
